Congratulations! As an SBIR awardee you have proven that you have a promising concept, a winning team and a thorough plan for making a meaningful difference in research on our Nation’s behalf. Whether you are just beginning with your first Phase I award or you are a Phase II grantee, the time period for performance of your award will pass more quickly than you can imagine.

With your SBIR grant you have earned the unique privilege of Federal sponsorship of your research. However, this privilege brings certain responsibilities. In order to be good stewards of their investments in innovative research, the Federal government, through its various executive agencies, expects compliance with certain minimum standards in areas such as accounting policies, personnel practices, control procedures and the protection of research subjects. Ensuring compliance with these standards is not an insignificant task. It can represent the most frustrating and distracting aspect of your research and development activities.

WILLISWORKS can ease the administrative burden of managing your grants and contracts. The more focused you are on your project objective the better your chances for successful commercialization. WILLISWORKS has specialized in the administration of Federal small business research grants and contracts since 1997. While many consultants and firms serving the SBIR community focus upon getting an award, WILLISWORKS picks up the ball where the others leave off. Our focus is on helping you keep your award and enhancing your relationship with your grantor by designing, implementing and maintaining compliant systems and procedures.

Unlike the singular nature of a grant proposal, where a tremendous burst of energy is followed by a passive process of waiting and occasionally responding to inquiries, post-award grant/contract management is an ongoing and active process. Responsible grant administration is critical to the success of your research and development project. Our services will aid you in achieving that success and can range from a single consultation to review your current systems, through performing all of your routine accounting and grants management activities. Our post-award administration expertise extends to such areas as:

  • Creating compliant policies and procedures manuals for areas such as personnel, travel, and fiscal management.
  • Creating and maintaining custom project budget and expenditure tracking reports
  • Establishing and maintaining adequate timekeeping policies
  • Establishing, implementing and maintaining compliant accounting policies and control systems
  • Assisting with budget modification requests and other liaison activities with your contract manager at your granting agency
  • Preparing, submitting and assisting in negotiating your incurred cost proposals
  • Preparing and submitting periodic Financial Status Reports (FSRs) as required by your grant terms and conditions
  • Assisting in preparation for audit by DCAA or other cognizant agency
  • Assisting in pre-closeout activities, including submitting Final FSR

A contract with WILLISWORKS can take whatever form best meets your day-to-day operational needs. You can do your books in house, we can work with your outside accountant/bookkeeper, or we can maintain your books for you.

For over a decade, WILLISWORKS has been providing emerging and established research and development entities across the Nation with the freedom to focus on their goals while meeting the complex challenges of grant management. Why not put us to work for you?
